Christmas tree from M&S

Fashionable Firs

Everyone who loves fashion knows what the key trends are in-store, from big shoulders to leather jackets. We know what goes together and what doesn’t. But does our fashion expertise extend to Christmas trees?

Yes Christmas trees! It’s that time of the year again where baubles and tinsel come out from last year and you create some sort of mismatched mayhem in your living room.

How about this year, you bring the fashion trends into your Christmas decorations? We have take three of this seasons most popular trends and show you how to dress your tree like a catwalk model…

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree

This season is all about letting out your inner rebel. With studded shoes and BlackandGoldBaublesbhsbags, harsh, visible zipped dresses and leather everything hitting the stores, it only seems right to continue it into your home.

The easiest way to start this trend is to get a black tree; these once-tacky monstrosities are now sleek and sexy. Scatter twinkling lights onto the branches and some gold tinsel and beads to add some vampish glamour. You now chandalier Debenhamshave the basis of a great tree.

For an aggressive look, get small strips of leather (or faux leather) and tie into bows on the branches. Then hang some gold and black baubles in the gaps - we love the black and gold decorative baubles from Bhs £4 for a pack of 6.

For a more delicate touch, a Gothic tree may be more appropriate, with chandelier type decorations and pretty shapes. We love Debenhams collection of dainty decs.

Last Christmas

Next decorationsIf you prefer colour and lots of it, why not take on the 80’s trend? Everything is bold, brash and a little bit thrown together.

Start with a white Christmas tree then throw on some multicoloured lights, (making sure you get the ones with a clear wire). Tinsel can look too heavy on dainty white trees, so strings of beads can be a great alternative.

To finalise the look, use baubles in all different shapes, sizes and colours. We love this 100 pieces mixed shatterproof bauble set from Next at £20.

Purple Decs DebenhamsFuturistic trends include the great architectural designs that hit the catwalk and inspired the large shoulders, tailored clothes and all those silver and sequins we see in-store.

This trend doesn’t need a traditional tree; it needs a branch, preferably a silver one. Sometimes you can buy these already painted from DIY shops or gardenGlass Bird John Lewis centres but why not have a go at spraying your own branch silver? Then place it in a decorated flower pot and away you go.

Small LED lights are perfect for decoration branches as they are small and subtle, but anything else like tinsel or beads would over power it. Take tips from the futuristic trends and keep colours cool and pale. Pastel blues, purples, silvers and white work well. This is also the best tree to show off your glass decorations. We love these glass birds from John Lewis 2 for £4.

So whatever your favourite trend is this season, turn it into your Christmas inspiration with a little help from The Trafford Centre.
