Wilderspool Wood is an oasis of natural woodland within the grounds of The Trafford Centre, a short stroll from The Great Hall. The wood is protected and managed by the Centre as a wildlife haven and community resource.
The freshwater ponds in the woods have become a breeding ground for many species including wrens, mallards and koi, as well as a variety of visiting insects.
Bird boxes have been introduced to attract more species to the woods, and a programme of recycling dead timber has provided suitable habitats for insects which will, in turn, attract more wildlife.
In 2009, The Trafford Centre held a World Environment Day competition to design an outdoor classroom in the woods.
